After the vehicle arrives at the port and is released from customs, it still cannot be driven freely until the required compliance and registration process in Israel has been completed.
The first step is to obtain a temporary driving permit from the Licensing Authority, allowing the vehicle to be driven specifically for the purpose of completing the required inspections and registration procedures. The temporary permit is generally valid for 48 hours, although in certain cases it may be issued for a longer period depending on the circumstances.
To obtain the temporary permit, the importer must present an identification document, the vehicle import license, and the customs release document.
The vehicle must then undergo a compliance inspection in accordance with Regulations 282/309 at an authorized vehicle inspection center or a laboratory approved by the Israeli Ministry of Transport.
During the inspection, the vehicle’s VIN, technical specifications, and Datasheet are checked against the information appearing on the import license. The vehicle is also inspected to verify its roadworthiness, safety, and compliance with the applicable requirements.
The inspection must be scheduled in advance. It is generally carried out at one of the main authorized inspection locations, such as Holon or Haifa. Based on the information I received, the inspection appointment may be scheduled within approximately two months from the vehicle’s arrival in Israel, so the waiting time for an available appointment should be taken into consideration.
On the day of the inspection, the importer must bring an Israeli ID card or passport, the customs release document, the original import license issued by the Ministry of Transport, and all original technical documentation for the vehicle, including a Datasheet showing the vehicle’s VIN.
For vehicles manufactured according to U.S. standards, it is also necessary to verify that the VIN physically stamped or displayed on the vehicle is identical to the VIN appearing on the U.S. registration document or Title.
In terms of timing, once the vehicle has been released from customs, a temporary driving permit, generally valid for approximately 48 hours, can be obtained for the purpose of completing the registration and inspection procedures. However, the appointment for the compliance inspection itself may take up to approximately two months from the vehicle’s arrival in Israel.
The compliance and registration inspection process is NOT included in the final vehicle sale price.
